A Wake in the Current: Words by Kyle Feldman, Paintings by Jon Reischl @ Viewpoint Gallery | April 19-27, 2024

image of collage painting featuring a face looking through a scope amidst a clutter of abstract shapes

This exhibition is the result of a collaboration between writer Kyle Feldman and visual artist Jon Reischl that began amidst the uncertainty and anxiousness of pandemic isolation and has continued sporadically over the months and years that followed.

Through a collection of over 40 poems and paintings, Feldman and Reischl's work knowingly engages with itself and functions as a restive journal and abstract chronicle of a time that still simultaneously feels paradoxically like the distant past and interminable present.

Viewpoint Gallery is open daily from 1pm to 5pm during artists’ exhibitions.

Reception – Friday, Apr 19, 4-8 PM

2023 Souvenirs: Paintings by Jon Reischl TractorWorlks Building Minneapolis, MN Details

Part retrospective of past works, part prospective of works in progress. The common thread connecting these collections is a fascination with the nature of memory and a determination to represent the phenomenon through purely visual means. The entanglement of abstraction with distinct objectivity is more than an aesthetic preference, it operates as a metaphor for the ineffable manner in which we experience our own awareness. This exhibition was a four-month residency. More info

2014 Settlers: New Paintings by Jon Reischl The Phipps Center for the Arts Hudson, WI Details

20 paintings examining the nature of memory and the presence of mind through a cast of enigmatic characters and improbable settings.

Through a method of compilation, regression and refinement, I mimic in technique, and attempt to capture aesthetically, the cognitive process of human memory. Working in layers with overlapping imagery, each new piece of information visually redefines and subjectively recontextualizes the existing shapes and lines. What start out as distinct images signifying moments, ideas, and all manner of empirical data, transform into something infinitely more complicated when compounded and considered together.

2010 An Evening of the Odds Nicademus Gallery St. Paul, MN Details

March 6th - April 6th, 2010 at Nicademus Art for An Evening of the Odds: New Works by Jon Reischl.

The show's title, An Evening of the Odds, with it's glib multi-entendre, is consistent with Reischl's fondness for wordplay, but also suggestive of the sense of resigned struggle present in much of his work. His subjects often seem to be, in one way or another, at odds with their surroundings, yet also at relative ease, as if to imply that there is contentment to be found amongst the chaos.

Reischl's work covers familiar thematic ground, exploring the role of Creator by offering up the interpretive reigns to his audience. And in the case of his Variable Title paintings, blatantly encouraging them to physically interact with the pieces.

2022 Welcome Voices Lutheran Church of the Resurrection Saint Paul, MN Details
Abstract painting"Acanterburytale1944" by Jon Reischl
From the Jon Reischl's artist statement in the exhibition notes:
Inspired by a 2012 study published in the Journal of Neuroscience—which suggests that every time an event or experience is recalled, the defining details are permanently altered—these paintings explore the distortion of memory over time and the affect this susceptibility has on our sense of self and our understanding of the reality we inhabit. The images are composed of randomly captured and superimposed film stills. Overlaying the images fractures recognizable objects (and subjects) into new, abstract forms. However remnants of the original images persist, redefined in both form and context by the convergent imagery. Ultimately these paintings represent an attempt to visualize our quietly tumultuous struggle to preserve moments in time. Even if, in our desperation to hold on to them, those memories slowly give way to imagination.

2018 Breadth AZ Gallery Saint Paul, MN Details
Abstract painting"Copper" by Ethan Rohde & Jon Reischl
From the exhibition notes:
‘Breadth’ means both an overall unity of artistic effect and a vast range. This exhibition addresses both. Breadth: Conversations in Form, seeks to explore what happens in a space when two-dimensional art is intentionally paired with three-dimensional art. We’ve hand-selected sculptural work to which we intend to playfully pair with two-dimensional submissions in the hopes of establishing a unique dialog between forms.
